School of Political Science and Public Administration
¡¡¡¡The School of Political Science and Public Administration comes from the former Department of Political Science, which was officially renamed on March 31, 2003. The school has three departments, namely the Department of Public Administration, Department of International Politics, and the Department of Political Science. It also hosts the Institute of Local Government Administration, Institute of Political Education, Center for WTO and Government Reform, Center for Leaders Decision-making Studies, and the Center for Rural Autonomy Studies.


¡¡ By May 2003 the school has 4 full and 7 associate professors and 17 lecturers. Eight faculty members are eligible to advise Master¡¯s students. Four faulty members have doctoral degree and 17 have master¡¯s degree. There are 452 registered students including 408 full time students in undergraduate study and 44 graduate students for master¡¯s study program.

¡¡¡¡The school offers 3 undergraduate majors in public administration, international politics and political/ideological education; and 3 graduate majors for Master¡¯s degree in public administration, Marxist theory and political/ideological education, and theory of political science. The major of public administration is listed as the priority subject of Shanxi Province. The school hosts the state-of-art teaching and research facilities for teach and research like multimedia classroom, automatic office laboratories, mock laboratories and a school library.

¡¡¡¡Other study programs include the joint graduate course program and Master of Public Administration (MPA) program with Beijing Normal University and People¡¯s University of China. The school has also invited renown scholars as affiliated professors, and the academic seminars are held on a regular basis.

Study Programs in the School of Political Science and Public Administration

Major of Public Administration:
Overview: This major prepares students with the knowledge and develops ability in both theory and practice of pubic administration in China and the rest of the world. The students receive training in administration, management, economics, political science and legal affairs. The graduates take the jobs in administrative and secretarial positions in government, public services, social organizations, colleges and schools, etc. About 30% pursue graduate studies. The upon-graduation employment rate has been more than 80% in recent years.

Major courses: public administration; public policies; politics and government of China; law of public administration and law of administrative litigation; government economics, municipal administration, history of public administration in the West; managerial psychology; art of leaders; administrative organization; institutions of government employment; history of public administration of China; human resource development and management; administrative monitoring; social investigation; social security; public relation, administrative writing; automatic office management; electronic administration, etc.

Major of International Politics:
Overview: This major is oriented by the theories and practices of international affairs. The students are to lay a solid foundation in international politics, knowledge in diversified fields and develop analytical ability and problem solving capability in the field of international issue research, teaching and pragmatic operation. The students are required to be practically skillful in one foreign language in terms of reading, translating, listening comprehension and oral delivery. Facilitated by further implementation of China¡¯s reform and open-door policy, the employment opportunities are promising from government institutions, news and journalism agencies; foreign invested firms, and research institutions involving international affairs. Other options include teaching and research in colleges and schools.

Major courses: international politics; international political economics; modern international relations; diplomatic; western theories of international relationship; comparative oriental and occidental cultures; international relations of PRC; international strategy; world socialist theory and practice; American politics and diplomatic; Japanese politics and diplomatic; comparative modernization; world religion and society; art of negotiation; contemporary international affairs; development of the third world countries; African politics and diplomatic; Taiwan issues, etc.

Major of Ideological and Political Education
Overview: This is emphasizes on comprehensiveness, scientific orientation and practical operations. The students are to be well-prepared with fundamental Marxist theories and other necessary knowledge in diversified fields, as well as the oral and writing skills as a part of society adaptation ability. The employment opportunities for the graduates are the administrative and political education positions in government institutions, public services and military. Other options include teaching and research in colleges and schools. The upon-graduation employment rate has been more than 80% since this major was set up.
