The College of Physical Education of Shanxi University was founded in 1996, but its history can be traced back to 1951. Its original name is Department of Sports, which is one of the 16 oldest departments in China. Now it has become a key base of teaching, research, training and cultivating talented men.

The college consists of 9 laboratories of dissecting, physiology, health care, etc; a reference room, a compositive gym and a body-building centre. Besides, it has special playground for track and field, balls and training as well.

The college is composed of Department of Sports, Department of Physical Education, Department of Social, Sports and the institute of national & Traditional Sports. It has 3 major: Physical Education, Sports &Training, and Social Sports; 3 Master’s Degrees: Science of Physical Education and Training, Science of Sports & Human Body, and Science of Sports & Humanities. The college also has a strong staff force. There are 5 professors, 18 associate professors and 12 lecturers in the college. In recent years, the college has undertaken 1 national research project and 20 provincial and ministerial research projects. And 180 papers have been published in scientific journals at home and abroad.

Nowadays, the composition of the staff has been optimized with regard to its educational background, professional titles and knowledge structure. A group of young academic leaders have distinguished themselves and come to the fore. The students obtain not only a solid knowledge of sports theories, but also the valuable training experiences from which they will be benefit a lot. They can quickly adapt to their work after graduation. They are hard-working, creative and generally praised.

The development of the college is the result of the mutual effort of the leaders and the staff. We will continue to work hard to make our contribution to the training of physical education teachers and the development of physical education in Shanxi and in China.
