Department of physics    Department of Electronics & Information Technology

College of physics & Electronics Engineering

The college consists of 2 departments: department of Physics, founded in 1957, and department of Electronics & information Technology, founded in 1994. Besides, the college has the following academic bodies: institute of theoretical physics research, founded in 1993, and institute of photo-electronics Research, founded in 1990.

The physics is a first-rank doctoral mobile station. The physics specialty is the training base of state fundamental science, and is a provincial key discipline. Meanwhile, optics and theoretical physics are provincial key disciplines as well. The quantum and optics lab is a key lab of ministry of education.

At present, the college has a staff body of 136.

Department of physics

Funded in 1957, the department of physics is one of the most important departments in Shanxi university. It offers 3 Bachelor's Degree programs, namely physical science, appied physics and materal physics; 2 master's programs, namely theoretical physics and science of physics & Electronics; 1 doctor's program---theoretical physics.

The department has a strong research and teaching team, which is composed of 3 supervisors for Ph.D. candidates, 17 full professors and associate prefessors, with 12 teachers possessing doctor's degrees.

The department cinsists of 3 key Laboratories, a computer room with 40 computers and a language lab. The three labs are for Universal physics, modern physics and materiaal physics. Its theoretical physics dicipline is the Shanxi provincial basic research key discipline. In the past 3 years, the department has undertaken 4national, 8 ministerial and provincial research projects. Recently, the department is undertaking 2 national research projects of the state "Ninety-five" program and 13 ministerial and provincial research projects. It has published more than 240 papers in scientific publications at home and abroad, among which owner 90 have been cited by SCI, EI and ISTP. In addition, we have won 6 scientific & technological progress prizes of Shanxi province, 2 national invention prizes and 2 teaching achievement prizes of Shanxi province.

Combination of theoretical physics with optics is the characteristic of the department. Students are trained not only to obtain a solid background in mathematics, physics and pouring language, but also to possess good knowledge and skills in practice. During the recent years, the education is strengthened in electronics and computer technology skills. The department provides solid core sources of computer science and technology. The scope of specialization are broadened to enable the graduates to be more competitive and adaptive in the fields of rapidly prograssingsciences and technologies. The department aims at training 21st century professionals of wide scope of knowledge, great motivation at work, high adaptability in scientific research, management and teaching. It place emphasis on expanding students' scope of knowledge, so that they can have a general idea of the related interdisciplinary subjects, high-tech development and prospects of application, paving the way for their future research and development. By deepening the reform, more and more better students will be trained and research will brought to a higher level with the object of building a comprehensive system of physics sciences and turning the department and institute into a center for international scientific research and cooperation.

We have achieved great success in the decades past. We are confident that a brilliant future lays before us the new millennium.

Department of Electronics & Information Technology

Founded in 1994, the Department of Electronics and Information Technology is one of the earliest institutions in China engaged in teaching and research in Electronics and Information Science. After 20 years of endeavor, the department has grown to be the strongest and most favourable among other universities in Shanxi province as well as in the nation. It is playing an ever-important role in the development of Shanxi’s information technology as well as its economy.

The department offers 4 programmes for the undergraduate students, majoring in Electronics Information Science and Technology, Photo-electronics Information Science and Technology, Electronics Information Engineering, and Electronics Science and Technology. It is authorized to award 2 Master’s Degrees of Optics and Optics Engineering, 1 Doctor’s Degree of Optics. It owns a post doctoral mobile station of Physics as well. The dept. is one of the sponsors which are “Bases of State Foundational Scientific research and cultivating teaching talented man”.

The dept. possesses a strong faculty body of including 7 supervisors for Ph. D candidates, 3 full Professors, 9 associate professors. It has gained much strength in academic staff and has advanced equipments. There are 6 special laboratories, besides basic labs, which are electronics circuit lab, photo-electronics technology lab, computer network lab, communication lab, auto-control lab, EDA lab. These facilities will meet the needs of teaching and research of the teachers and students. In recent years, the department has undertaken tens of national and provincial research projects and has published hundreds of papers in periodicals home and abroad.

Combination of natural science with engineering is the characteristic of the department. Students are trained not only to obtain a solid background in mathematics, physics and foreign languages, but also to possess good knowledge and skills in engineering. In recent years, the education is strengthened in Optics and computer technology, and students are required to master some basic hardware knowledge and several special softwares in engineering. The dept. has been enrolling students extensively majoring in Electronic Engineering and Information Engineering to strengthen their basic skills, broaden their scope of knowledge, and enhance their comprehensive qualities and abilities. The dept. provides solid core course of computer science and technology, and the students have the ability to gain substantial depth in another area though a required minor in a second subject. The dept. has been actively involved, with success, in international exchange and cooperation including exchange of scholars.

We enjoyed quite fast development in the past several years. Efforts were made on curriculum reform, new courses, training program for outstanding students, etc. to meet the increasing need from the society. Looking into the new century, we are confident that new contribution will be made in the frontiers of electronics and information science and technology, and domestic as well as international collaboration aiming at global informationization will be greatly enhanced.
