College of Music

Founded in 1996, the College of Shanxi University has its origin in the former Shanxi Art College which was established 1958. With the development of decades of years, the department has educated thousands of graduates in music field. Many of the young and middle-aged gradates are now playing a leading role in their respective fields.

The college is composed of 3 departments which are the Department of Theory & Composition, the Department of Voice & Keyboard and the Department of Orchestra & Traditional Instruments. At the undergraduate level 4 major projects, science of Music, Composition & Composition Technique, Music Performance, and choreographer-director, are offered, all of which lead to B.Sc. Degree authorized by the State Education Commission (SEC). There are 2 master’s programmes of Science of Music and Science of Art are offered as well.

The college is in possess of a strong staff team of 51 members, including 4 professions, 17 associate professors, 21 lecturers and 9 assistants. We have a musical compositive laboratory, a reference room of music books, and a music research institute, and has become a standard base for music research. Now we own 35,000 copies of books and audio-visual materials, a set of modern audio-visual education equipment, which can meet the heeds of teaching and research of the teachers and students.

Music: The program of study for Music major is designed to equip students with the knowledge of music theory and the knowledge of systematic and basic speciality courses. Students can develop the ability of performance practices and teaching.

Composition & composition Technique: The program of study for Composition & Composition Technique major is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required for the fullest development of their individual creative gift. This is a skilled and spiritual enrichment course for personal development in all areas of music.

Music Performance: This major includes Chinese Music, piano, fiddle, accordion, flute, strings, woodwinds, voice, etc. The program of study for Music Performace is designed to equip students with the knowledge of Music theory and speciality, and to develop skilled performers familiar with performace in all styles, and all areas of vocal or string techniques through the performance of etudes, studies, repertoire, solo, ensemble, and orchestral literature. Students can develop their knowledge and skill in Chinese Music & instrumental technique.

Choreographer-director: The program of study for Choreographer-director is designed to equip students with the standard knowledge of dancing, and the ability of dancing performance. Students will become skilled performers in dancing area, such as ballet, contemporary dancing, and national dancing. Students are expected to be engaged in writing and directing a play, teaching and research work.

Through 44 years’ development and improvement, the Department has become one of the important educational bases for training first-class professionals in its field. We take pride in our distinguished artistic faculty who, in addition to providing the highest, professional training, are noted for the attention they give to each individual student’s needs. Master-classes conducted by internationally renowned artists are also being offered when ever possible.
