1.General Introduction

Founded in 1936,History Department is among the earliest of its kind in Shanxi University and enjoys pretty high reputation nationwide. Today it has three undergraduate programs, namely, Historiography, Archaeology and Tourism Management. One discipline is authorized to confer doctoral degree (Modern and Contemporary History of China) and four disciplines are authorized to confer master’s degrees (Ancient History of China, Modern and Contemporary History of China, World History and Specialized History). Modern and Contemporary History of China is also a provincial key discipline .Now the department has a total enrollment of 416 full-time undergraduate students and 43 postgraduate students.

In order to enlarge the education extent and serve better the local economic and social development, the department and Shanxi Tourism Administration jointly founded Tourism College in 1997 on the basis of the program of Tourism Management. In 2000,it cooperated with Shanxi Cultural Relics Bureau and founded School of Culture and Museology on the basis of the programs of Historiography and Archaeology. They are geared mainly to adult education and on-the-job training.

The Department has a strong faculty team and excellent facilities. It has a faculty and staff body of 43 people. Among them, there are 3 enjoying special state subsidy, 22 with senior titles, 9 with doctor’s degrees and 18 with master’s degrees. It owns a reference room, a computer room, a phonetics classroom, an antique collection room and a set of audio-visual education equipment, which can meet the needs of teaching and research on the whole.

Since the foundation, the Department keeps enjoying great prestige at home owing to its high-level teaching and scientific research. It had ever won an award for outstanding achievements of the National Social Sciences Fund, two awards for outstanding teaching achievements of the State Education Commission and many provincial awards for outstanding teaching achievements. Many of its curriculums are also graded excellent by the school authorities. The students in the department have a solid professional foundation and their achievements are very excellent. Generally 15% of the undergraduate students or over can be admitted to study for master’s degree after graduation and about 30% of the postgraduates can pursue advanced study for doctorship . In the field of scientific research, its study of modern social history of China takes a leading position nationwide, which makes it one of the four important centers in this field. Since 1995,the faculty members of the department have altogether published over 30 books and over 100 articles in nation-level periodicals.
