School of Foreign Language
The School of Foreign Language comes from the Department of Foreign Language that was founded in 1919, which was officially renamed in 1996. In its 80-year-long history more than 8,000 students have graduated from this school. At present approximately 800 students enroll in the programs for undergraduate and graduate studies for either master¡¯s or doctoral degrees, and in adult continuing education.

¡¡¡¡The school administrates two departments: the Department of Western Languages and the Department of Japanese and Russian Language. The teaching courses include English, Japanese, Russian, German, French and Spanish to the students at various programs from undergraduate study to doctoral research. The school offers three master¡¯s degree programs: English Language & Literature, Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics and Japanese Language & Literature; and three bachelor¡¯s degree programs: English Language & Literature (including Technical English), Japanese Language & Literature and Russian Language & Literature. The undergraduate students may also participate in one of the three special bilingual education programs: English plus French, English plus German or English plus Russian.

¡¡¡¡In her history the school had a large number of prominent scholars serving as faculty, including Xu Shihu, Yan Shuen, Guan Qitong, Li Wanjie, Chang Feng, Gao Jian, Peng Fumin, Zhao Chaoqun, and Yang Deyou. Currently among 62 faculty members in the school are 7 full professors, 12 associate professors, 15 lecturers and 9 teaching assistants. Thirty-one faculty members have doctoral or master¡¯s degree of a diversified backgrounds. This professional faulty team focuses on the students learning to satisfy the individual needs through the delivery of high quality education services. The faculty members are also active in linguistic and international cultural research and have yielded 44 journal publications and works in recent years.

¡¡¡¡The school houses the state-of-art facilities for teaching and research including six multimedia laboratories, a computer room, a ground satellite receiving station, and a reference room with over 50,000 volumes of books and other materials. In addition the school operates several public service programs: the Shanxi Province Language Training Center for the Perceptive Visitors to Foreign Country; Taiyuan Test Center of Nation Public Test (PETS-5), Shanxi Test Center of TOEFL; the Britain Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC) Training & Test Center.

¡¡¡¡The education programs of the school are to provide training to the students in terms of the establishment of solid foundation in fundamental theory and methodology as well as a broad academic background. They also cover the development in practical skill, integrity, and sound physical and psychiatric conditions. Students take the courses of language, literature, history, political science, economics, social culture, etc. They receive sophisticatedly designed training in a stringent way for the development in listening comprehension, oral delivery, reading ability, writing skill and translating techniques. The course of general science and business are also taught. The students are to lay solid language foundations in language and develop diversified knowledge backgrounds in humanities, science and technology, management and Chinese language and literature. They are trained as the prospective foreign language professionals with the necessary qualifications in the fields of oral interpretation, written translation, language teaching and research, as well as in the institutions of international affairs, cultural exchange and cooperation.
