College of Fine Arts

The College of Fine Arts of Shanxi University was founded on the basis of the Fine Arts Department. It is 45 years since the College of Fine Arts came into being. It is a very important place for the art education and art originality in Shanxi where a large quantity of talented persons for each art field has been cultivated for our country. The graduates are active in different art education and high schools. Many of them have won various prizes of international or domestic exhibitions and competitions.

So far the college has set up 2 departments, namely, the Painting Department and the Design Art Department, as well as 2 teaching and research sections (consisting of the historical Theory teaching section and the postgraduate teaching section). It offers eight bachelor’s programmers: the Traditional Chinese Painting speciality, the Oil Painting speciality, the Woodcut Painting speciality, the Fresco speciality, the Sculpture Speciality, the Decorative Art Design speciality, the Environmental Art Design speciality, speciality, the Science of Fine Arts speciality. For Science of Fine Arts and Science of Art, post-graduates education has come into being.

The college has 42 staff members, including 5 professors, 10 associate professors, 19 lecturers, and 8 assistants. Its reference room has a large collection of works of cut, books, original works of painting and calligraphy of both ancient and modern times. There are labs for education through electrical audio, computer education, photography, pottery, decoration, silkscreen, etc, and these facilities have been providing convenient conditions for teachers and students. Owing to its remarkable achievement, the State Ministry of Education as National Training Base of Professional Teachers ratified it in 2000. The students are designed to be equipped with specialized knowledge of art fields and strong ability of bringing forth-new ideas.

According to various demands of the society, the college has attentively give plan to the characteristics and superiority of each speciality, and has adopted a multi-level and multi-standard mode of running the college. It enrolls students from all over the country, and has set up undergraduate courses, professional training courses and postgraduate courses, but also education for adult’s classes, assistants’ classes for advanced studies and special training classes. Meanwhile, taking the key disciplines as the lead, it has laid stress on the construction of disciplines of different kinds at different levels. By attaching importance to the training of the students’ ability in artistic creation and in practical manipulation and their adaptability to the society, and by strengthening and improving constantly such teaching links as classroom instruction and instruction by way of Practice, it has continuously improved its teaching quality and increased its teaching benefit. At the same time, it has also strengthed teaching and academic exchange with fraternal academies at home.

As a cradle of young arts, the Fine Arts College of Shanxi University has provided the country with one crop of qualified artists with a fairly high level of artistic accomplishment after another. Quite a few graduates have become mainstays in vocational or administrative work at the posts where they are working, and some of them have enjoyed certain reputation at home and abroad. At present, the teaching and administrative staff and students are rousing themselves for vigorous efforts to build the college into one of first rank in our county and with its own features.
